Doric is part of everyday life across Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire, but where did it come from and how has it changed over time?

The University of Aberdeen’s Elphinstone Institute has explored exactly that in a series of videos tracing the history and development of Doric.

Where does Doric come from?

Doric is the name widely used for the Scots spoken across the north-east of Scotland. It has developed over centuries and has its own distinctive vocabulary, pronunciation and expressions.

The University of Aberdeen series looks at that history in more detail, with contributions from academics including Professor Jennifer Smith and Professor Robert McColl Millar.
